(Information Processing)

INTRODUCTION:

The world of legal, quality and regulatory compliance and data management is a growing area of importance as companies strive for best practice. In this course you will understand the role and importance in managing compliance and understanding of data management. The core subjects include Digital Compliance, Business Law, Statistics and Information & Communication Systems while ensuring skills in Spreadsheets and Communications are developed. This course will allow the student to support the compliance and data management function in any business.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS:

  • Leaving Certificate, LCA or QQI Level 4.
  • CERFL proficiency at B2 for access to Level 5 courses for those whose first language is not English.
  • All applicants will undergo a processing stage during which further information will be gathered in relation to their application. An offer of a place on this course is contingent on the applicant meeting the entry requirements set out here and satisfactory completion of the processing stage.

  • QQI Level 5 Certificate in Information Processing (5M2067)
  • QQI Component Maths (5N1833) – available as an option in the evening for learners needing Maths for progression.

COURSE CONTENT

    Information & Communication Systems - 5N1952

    Create a data capture form. Describe methods of securing data e.g access control, passwords, authentication etc. Explore data protection legislation. Use a range of common ICT terminology including server, dumb terminal, LANs etc. 

    Database Methods - 5N0783

    Use MS Access to create databases from design specifications under a time constraint. Learn to manipulate information from  databases and retrieve and output in report format 

    Spreadsheet Methods - 5N9177

    Produce a spreadsheet that meets a simple design specification and is fit for purpose. Learn a range of spreadsheet features such as data and cell formatting techniques, conditional IF statements, financial, date and time functions. Generate a variety of types of graphs from spreadsheet data. Automate routine multi-step tasks through the creation, execution and management of simple macros. 

    Communications - 5N0690

    Acquire the writing skills needed for the workplace, learn to speak fluently and coherently in a professional setting, develop interpersonal skills and have an understanding of the impact of ICT on society. 

    Work Experience - 5N1356

    Planning, preparation and reflection on work placement. Job finding strategies, CV and personal statement preparation, interview skills. Practise employability skills with a view to future planning. 

    Statistics (includes R Programming) - 5N2066

    Understand data, data collection and compile statistical information. Identify and implement appropriate means of presenting data. Analyse and interpret statistical information and learn how to use statistics for work and life.

    Behavioural Studies - 5N1351

    Examine the role of organisational psychology in understanding the situation of the buyer in the marketing environment. Explain core psychological concepts, e.g .attitudes, culture, socialisation, the influence of groups on behaviour and the importance of the role of family on behaviour. 

    Digital Compliance - 6N1272

    Learn about the role and responsibilities of the Data Controller relating to data creation, accuracy, processing, storage, retention and disposal and relevant data protection legislation. Develop your knowledge of methods and procedures for keeping data secure. Learn how to create policy documents and design procedures for monitoring, auditing and reporting.

    Business Law - 5N2091

    Gain an understanding of the key concepts and fundamental principles of law in the context of business and commercial activities. 

    ADDITIONAL TRAINING / WORKSHOPS

    • Data Protection (online) This course gives learners an overview of GDPR. The workshop examines what GDPR stands for and gives an understanding of the current data protection rules and obligations. The learners also receive information on the types of data, the terminology associated with GDPR, the penalties with breaches, storage of data and general do’s and don’ts regarding data. A record of achievement from Morrison’s Island Campus is issued on successful completion. 
    • Microsoft Outlook (online) This Microsoft Outlook workshop will give information on accessing your college email, Outlook layout, how to send and receive emails, attaching/downloading a file and reply optionsIt also covers organising your emails – folders etc, Outlook settings, signature, out-of-office reply, using the calendar, setting up meetings, setting up reminders and to do lists. A Certificate of Completion from Morrison’s Island Campus is issued on successful completion. 

    WORK PLACEMENT / EXPERIENCE

    Students undertake a block work placement of 2 weeks in a business/compliance/data management setting. Work placement is a highly valued component of the student experience here at the college. An excellent opportunity for you to gain insight into the world of work. Students are encouraged to source their own Work Placement but you will be supported by the Work Placement team should you need assistance to do this.
