INTRODUCTION:

It is critical in these times that all businesses seek to be sustainable in as many ways as possible. Explore sustainable business in this progressive course and become part of a more sustainable future. Completion also opens up progression avenues to Higher Education establishments in addition to work opportunities.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS:

  • Leaving Certificate, LCA or QQI Level 4.
  • Mature students are exempt from Leaving Certificate requirement.
  • CERFL proficiency at B2 for access to Level 5 courses for those whose first language is not English.
  • All applicants will undergo a processing stage during which further information will be gathered in relation to their application. An offer of a place on this course is contingent on the applicant meeting the entry requirements set out here and satisfactory completion of the processing stage.

COURSE CONTENT

Applied Economics - 5N1350

Analyse the role of the key players in the Irish economy such as government, industry and consumers. Identify a range of barriers to free trade. Calculate national income from given data using each of the main measures. Analyse the impact of a variety of changes in supply, demand and market equilibrium.

Business Administration Skills - 5N1610

Examine a range of recruitment options for selecting and appointing staff and current employment rights legislation. Maintain a range of documents pertaining to HR management and employees  including employment contracts, attendance records etc. Explore sources of finance for a business including cash-flow. Examine different types of meetings held and complete a range of documentation necessary for the effective function of a meeting. Explain the role of quality systems.

Work Experience - 5N1356

Planning, preparation and reflection on work placement. Job finding strategies, CV and personal statement preparation, interview skills. Practise employability skills with a view to future planning 

Communications - 5N0690

Acquire the writing skills needed for the workplace, learn to speak fluently and coherently in a professional setting, develop interpersonal skills and have an understanding of the impact of ICT on society. 

Spreadsheet Methods - 5N1977

Produce a spreadsheet that meets a simple design specification and is fit for purpose. Learn a range of spreadsheet features such as data and cell formatting techniques, conditional IF statements, financial, date and time functions. Generate a variety of types of graphs from spreadsheet data. Automate routine multi-step tasks through the creation, execution and management of simple macros. 

Business Law - 5N2091

Explain the nature of contract and the essential features and terms of a valid contract. Explain what constitutes breach of contract and the available remedies. Reflect on the role and impact of EU legislation on Irish business activity and work practices and on the Irish consumer. Examine the main provisions of employment legislation and explore the area of consumer protection and consumer rights.

Digital Marketing - 5N1364

Choose appropriate e-tools to implement a digital marketing strategy. Plan a digital marketing campaign from inception to completion. Evaluate the effectiveness of campaigns using analytical e-tools. Outline the stages of analysis, development, implementation and control of digital marketing campaigns. Use e-tools including web analytics, social media monitoring, social bookmarking to monitor digital marketing campaigns.

Behavioural Studies - 5N1351

Examine the role of organisational psychology in understanding the situation of the buyer in the marketing environment. Explain core psychological concepts, e.g .attitudes, culture, socialisation, the influence of groups on behaviour and the importance of the role of family on behaviour.

ADDITIONAL TRAINING / WORKSHOPS

  • Introduction to GDPR (online) – This course gives learners an overview of GDPR. The workshop examines what GDPR stands for and gives an understanding of the current data protection rules and obligations. The learners also receive information on the types of data, the terminology associated with GDPR, the penalties with breaches, storage of data and general do’s and don’ts regarding data. A Certificate of Completion is issued on completion. 
  • Microsoft Outlook (online)This Microsoft Outlook workshop will give information on accessing your college email, Outlook layout, how to send and receive emails, attaching/downloading a file and reply options.  It also covers organising your emails – folders etc, Outlook settings, signature, out-of-office reply, using the calendar, setting up meetings, setting up reminders and to do lists. A Certificate of Completion from Morrison’s Island Campus is issued on successful completion.
  • State of the Art VR Training (Body Swaps) – We offer students the unique opportunity to enhance their soft skills using an advanced AI-powered learning platform.  This cutting-edge technology allows learners to engage in realistic, immersive simulations helping to build essential skills like communication skills, presentations, and team work.  Get personal feedback and be prepared for real-world challenges.

What hours are involved?

It is a full-time certificate course and classes normally runs from 9am to 5 pm Monday to Thursday and 9am to 2pm on Friday. 

What funding is available?

VTOS and the Susi grant are available as financial supports.

How is the course assessed?

The course is assessed through a combination of coursework (projects, assignments, learner records and portfolios) which is done throughout the year with exams held at Christmas and at the end April/start May. Exam timetables are published by the Examinations & Assessment Committee through the Student Intranet and the Exam Scheduler App. 

WORK PLACEMENT / EXPERIENCE

Students undertake a block work placement of 2 weeks in the sustainability/environmental section of any business. Work placement is a highly valued component of the student experience here at the college. An excellent opportunity for you to gain insight into the world of work. Students are encouraged to source their own Work Placement but you will be supported by the Work Placement team should you need assistance to do this.
