INTRODUCTION:

If you are an organised person and would love to work in administration in a busy doctors, dentists, hospital or other healthcare environment then this course is perfect for you. The admin team member in these environments is the person who sensitively deals with vulnerable clients to ensure that they are professionally dealt with. If you can see yourself in that role then this is the right course for you.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS:

  • Leaving Certificate, LCA or QQI Level 4.
  • Mature students are exempt from Leaving Certificate requirement.
  • CERFL proficiency at B2 for access to Level 5 courses for those whose first language is not English.
  • An offer of a place on this course is contingent on the applicant meeting the requirements set out here and satisfactory presentation at interview.

COURSE CONTENT

Business Administration Skills - 5N1610

Examine a range of recruitment options for selecting and appointing staff and current employment rights legislation. Maintain a range of documents pertaining to HR management and employees including employment contracts, attendance records etc. Explore sources of finance for a business including cash-flow. Examine different types of meetings held and complete a range of documentation necessary for the effective function of a meeting. Explain the role of quality systems.

Bookkeeping Manual and Computerised - 5N1354

Learn to record business transactions , post to ledgers and draw up a trial balance using both a manual accounting system and a computerised package.

Word Processing - 5N1358

Learn to produce professional mailable document. Learn file management and a host of functions including clipart, headers, footers, watermarks, graphics, tabs etc.

Communications - 5N0690

Acquire the writing skills needed for the workplace, learn to speak fluently and coherently in a professional setting, develop interpersonal skills and have an understanding of the impact of ICT on society.

Work Experience - 5N1356

Planning, preparation and reflection on work placement. Job finding strategies, CV and personal statement preparation, interview skills. Practise employability skills with a view to future planning.

Spreadsheet Methods - 5N1977

Produce a spreadsheet that meets a simple design specification and is fit for purpose. Learn a range of spreadsheet features such as data and cell formatting techniques, conditional IF statements, financial, date and time functions. Generate a variety of types of graphs from spreadsheet data. Automate routine multi-step tasks through the creation, execution and management of simple macros.

Medical Terminology - 5N2428

Define medical terminology and abbreviations. Use correct medical terminology in a wide range of specialities. Assemble and prepare x-ray reports. Prepare final medical reports ensuring the use of appropriate terminology, language and format.

Database Methods - 5N0783

Use MS Access to create databases from design specifications under a time constraint. Learn to manipulate information from databases and retrieve and output in report format.

Socrates Medical Package

Socrates software is a medical records system for a General Practice. It is used by Irish GPs. Our Socrates course which is certified by Morrison’s Island Campus includes the management of patient files and the addition of new patients, managing the appointment system for the practice.  It includes organising the waiting room and consultations of patients once they arrive at the practice, printing repeat prescriptions and referral letter as well as billing and fee management functions.  This course gives the student a valued experience in what it would be like to work as a receptionist in General Practice.

Macroom Centre - Infection Prevention and Control

The Infection Prevention and Control programme aims to give learners an in-depth look at this vital aspect of the healthcare industry/workplace. Topics covered include basic microbiology, healthcare associated infections and the role of infection prevention in the workplace. Additionally, the role and standards of the HSE & HIQA and hands on training in correct hand washing technique and the use of PPE is also covered.

ADDITIONAL TRAINING / WORKSHOPS

  • Introduction to GDPR This workshop gives learners an overview of GDPR. The workshop examines what GDPR stands for and gives an understanding of the current data protection rules and obligations. The learners also receive information on the types of data, the terminology associated with GDPR, the penalties with breaches, storage of data and general do’s and don’ts regarding data. A Macroom Centre Certificate is issued on completion. 
  • Microsoft Outlook – This Microsoft Outlook workshop will give information on accessing your college email, Outlook layout, how to send and receive emails, attaching/downloading a file and reply options.  It also covers organising your emails – folders etc, Outlook settings, signature, out-of-office reply, using the calendar, setting up meetings, setting up reminders and to do lists. A Macroom Centre Certificate is issued on completion. 
  • First Aid – This First Aid Workshop will introduce the learner to the principles of First Aid. The workshop includes identifying the role of the First Aider. Learners will understand how to respond to various injuries and illnesses including choking, fainting, burns, heart attacks, strokes, panic attacks, sprains and strains.  The purpose of this workshop is to give the learner a basic understanding of how to deal with First Aid Emergencies. It is not intended as a substitute for a full First Aid Response Course.  A Macroom Centre Certificate is issued on completion.

  • Mastering the Professional phone conversationThis workshop gives the learner the knowledge and skills when answering the telephone professionally in the workplace. Additionally, handling telephone complaints and ending calls is also covered. A Macroom Centre Certificate is issued on completion.

  • AMRIC Hand Hygiene (HSELand) – Effective hand hygiene is the single most effective thing that you can do to protect the people you care for and yourself from healthcare acquired infections (HCAI’s). But knowing is not enough – it’s important to apply what you have learnt and believe that it can be done. By the end of this course, you should know: Why hand hygiene is important:

    – When to practice hand hygiene.
    – How to perform hand hygiene in line with the WHO 5 Moments.
    – How to take care of your hands.

  • AMRIC Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) (HSELand) – This course on Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) will enable and empower you to make an assessment on the selection of PPE for a task and to put on and remove PPE correctly. By the end of the course, you will be able to: Identify why you need to wear PPE and where you need to wear it.
    – Recognise the appropriate PPE to wear to protect the body, face and eyes, and hands in different situations.
    – Put on and remove all PPE in acute and non-acute setting.
    – Dispose of used PPE safely.
    – Reflect on your own actions and behaviours in relation to PPE and infection prevention and control.
  • AMRIC Infection Prevention and Control (HSELand) – Practical programme which includes specific measures for prevention of infection in all healthcare facilities, how to identify hazards and carry out a well-informed risk assessment. How to control the sources and prevent onward transmission of infection.
  • Manual Handling (MH) Training and certification – This training (MH) is mandatory for person’s involved in manual handling tasks. It is required by legislation under The Safety Health and Welfare at Work (General Application) Regulation 2007 Part two chapter four. The training involves the theory module which is completed online (HSELanD.ie) and the practical module which is classroom based. The certificate obtained is valid for three years. Manual Handling training course delivers the proper techniques for lifting, carrying, loading, pushing and pulling various tasks or loads to reduce the risk of injury to the worker. The need to avoid manual handling by using mechanical aids where possible will also be demonstrated. It provides the skills to identify risks with various handling tasks. 

FAQs

What hours are involved?

Our courses are full-time, classes are timetabled Monday to Friday. Classes start at 9 and finish at 5 pm Monday to Thursday, with a 2pm finish on Friday.  Obviously you will not be timetabled for all these hours but no actual timetables will be available until classes start in September.

How is the course assessed?

The course is assessed through coursework (for example projects, assignments, learner records), these are done throughout the year. There will be some written/practical exams held at the end April/start May.

Are there job opportunities?

There are very good job opportunities in this area. There are numerous past students working in Hospitals, Clinics, GP surgeries, Dental Surgeries etc.

Will I get a place in a 3rd level course if I do this course?

Many of our students each year progress to 3rd level courses. All progressions are available on the college website. However, there is no guarantee of a place. Students apply through the CAO using their QQI level 5 results, students need to work hard in order to achieve the best possible results.

WORK PLACEMENT / EXPERIENCE

 Students undertake work experience one day a week in an office environment. Work placement is a highly valued component of the student experience here at the college. An excellent opportunity for you to gain insight into the world of work. Students are encouraged to source their own Work Placement but you will be supported by the Work Placement team should you need assistance to do this.
