This full time course will equip you with the knowledge, skills and confidence to advance in the youth work field.

Understanding Youthwork - 5N1366
Identify, explore and reflect on the nature of youth work. Become familiar with various youth work organisations and be able to identify and reflect on the different approaches of these different organisations. Explore current issues in youth work and critically reflect on the values underpinning youth work.
Working with Young People - 5N1384
Explore ways of relating to young people in community settings by developing an understanding of group work. Develop skills in organising and reviewing youth work activities. Reflect on your abilities and aptitude in youth work. Demonstrate good practice in working in youth work settings and outline the role of supervision.
Young People and Society - 5N2002
Look at key issues relevant to young people. Explore factors which influence and shape youth culture and sub culture both locally and globally. Familiarise yourself with a range of service provision for young people and explore and evaluate youth work provision.
Criminology - 5N2107
Gain an understanding of the behavioural theories associated with crime and its prevention. Look at social and economic factors affecting criminal behaviour. Explore criminal legislation and the role of stakeholders involved in crime prevention. Identify the key characteristics of a broad range of crimes, including drug related crime and outline suitable methods of research and investigation in the area of crime.

Acquire writing skills, learn to speak fluently and coherently in a professional setting, develop interpersonal skills and have an understanding of the impact of ICT on society.
Understanding Community Development - 5N1901
Understand key concepts and features of the community development process, its potential to contribute to social change, the factors that have shaped community development and the current challenges to the process. Explore the roles of the main organisations and bodies involved in community development in Ireland. Reflect on your experience in relation to power and assess your strengths and challenges in participating in community groups in collective action.
Substance Use - Issues for Youthwork - 5N2176
Access accurate information about substances and their effect. Examine contexts which influence young people’s use and abuse of substances. Examine a range of responses to substance use among young people. Work effectively as part of a team with best practice guidelines and contribute to the development of policy and codes of practice in relation to substance use at project level.
Work Experience - 5N1356
Planning, preparation and reflection on work placement. Job finding strategies, CV and personal statement preparation, interview skills. Practise employability skills with a view to future planning.
ADDITIONAL TRAINING / WORKSHOPS
- Child Protection – This workshop is an introduction to Children First is based on Children First: National Guidance for the Protection and Welfare of Children and the Children First Act 2015. The content includes recognising and reporting child abuse, the role of mandated persons, the responsibilities of organisations working with children to safeguard children. Furthermore, learners will be informed of the role of designated liaison persons. A certificate of completion will be awarded on completion of the course.
- TUSLA Children First (online)
- Mindfulness (online) – This Mindfulness course will introduce the learner to the practice of Mindfulness as a personal resource. The theory and practice of Mindfulness will enhance your understanding and demonstrate how it can be integrated into your life and your work. The topics include a better understanding of what mindfulness is, understanding how mindfulness can help us to manage stress and anxiety and learning practical tools to incorporate mindfulness into everyday life. A record of achievement from Morrison’s Island Campus is issued on successful completion.
- Data Protection (online) – This course gives learners an overview of GDPR. The workshop examines what GDPR stands for and gives an understanding of the current data protection rules and obligations. The learners also receive information on the types of data, the terminology associated with GDPR, the penalties with breaches, storage of data and general do’s and don’ts regarding data. A record of achievement from Morrison’s Island Campus is issued on successful completion.

What hours are involved?
The course is full time and runs Monday, Tuesday and Thursday potentially from 9-5pm and on Fridays from 9-2pm.
Can this course be completed online?
We do not offer the Youth Work course online.
I have been Garda vetted already. Do I need to have this done again?
Garda vetting is required for work experience, and you will make an application in September before the course starts. Garda vetting is for the organisation so unless you have already been Garda Vetted for the Cork ETB (Education and Training Board), you will need to make another application in Sept with the guidance of our Garda vetting team.
How is the course assessed?
The course is assessed through a combination of coursework (projects, assignments, learner records and portfolios) which is done throughout the year and one written exam (Criminology only) held at the end April/start May.
Is this course offered by night?
No, the Youth Work is not offered at night however some of the individual modules on the course are available at night. Please click HERE for further details.
Will I get a place in a 3rd level course if I do this course?
There are excellent links from the course into 3rd level courses. However, there is no guarantee of a place. Students apply through the CAO using their QQI level 5 results, so students need to work hard in order to achieve the best possible results.
Students undertake work placement one day a week (Wednesdays) for 15 weeks. Placement can be sourced in a variety of Youth Work settings e.g. Youth Reach, Foroige, CDYS etc. Garda vetting is an integral part of the application procedure for Work Experience.
Students are encouraged to source their own Work Placement but you will be supported by the Work Placement team should you need assistance to do this.
