INTRODUCTION:

If you have a Level 5 qualification in healthcare, childcare, psychology, applied social studies (or another related area) and are keen to expand your knowledge into the disciplines of inclusive education, mental health and disability awareness then this is the course for you. Fully realise your skills and knowledge and be part of the systematic response which seeks to understand and respond to the needs of marginalised children and adults. Graduates can gain access to Higher Education with our well established progressions routes or employment in the caring & equality sector.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS:

  • For entry to Level 6 a full QQI Level 5 Award in a complementary area is required.
  • All applicants will undergo a processing stage during which further information will be gathered in relation to their application.
  • An offer of a place on this course is contingent on the applicant meeting the entry requirements set out here and satisfactory completion of the processing stage.

CERTIFICATION

  • QQI Level 6 Advanced Certificate in Inclusive Education and Training (6M2263).
  • QQI Component Maths (5N1833) – available as option in evening for learners requiring Maths for progression.

COURSE CONTENT

Disability Awareness - 6N1975

This module focuses on the lived experience of people with disabilities. Issues such as models of disability, the classification of disabilities, education, law, employment and concepts such as Universal Design and Independent Living are explored among other relevant topics.

Differentiated Learning and Instruction - 6N2225

Examine challenges presented in implementing a best practice teaching and learning environment. Evaluate screening and profiling. Identify and discuss learning styles and their impact on lesson planning and teaching methodologies. Learn to deliver training to staff in a specific organisation on differentiated learning and instruction.

Health Promotion - 6N2214

Understand the importance of raising the awareness of health related issues with individuals and within the community. Understand how to effectively evaluate health promotion programmes and organise a health promotion event relevant to the local community.

Mental Health Awareness - 6N2209

Demonstrate an awareness of how body and mind interact to promote positive mental health. Learn about the ongoing interventions available in the community for people with enduring mental health difficulties (day centres, sheltered workshops, resource centres etc.). Recognise positive and negative factors which may affect mental health. Examine treatment approaches and their application (medication, physiotherapy, counselling etc.). Evaluate positive supports in the community which promote positive mental health e.g. yoga, pilates etc.

Inclusive Education and Practice - 6N2226

Understand the importance of individual education plans and their development as well as devising lesson plans. Explore the stages of reading, writing and maths, the difficulties people have and ways to help. Learn about classroom management techniques and problems that may be faced. Research intelligence, giftedness, learning disabilities, the causes and types of behavioural problems that may be encountered and ways to help.

Communications - 6N1950

This module builds on the core communications skills gained at level 5 while allowing the learner, working independently and or in a supervisory capacity, to develop such qualities as tact, diplomacy, empathy and patience necessary for communicating with staff/clients in a professional setting.

Boundary Management - 6N2207

The learner will be equipped with the knowledge, skill and competence to demonstrate and practice clear understanding of the ethical, legal and personal issues relating to appropriate boundaries in the workplace.

Work Experience - 6N1946

Present a detailed personal skills audit and career plan including personal goals, action points, development opportunities and career paths. Demonstrate supervisory skills and capacities in the workplace.

FAQs

Must I be Garda vetted for this course?

Yes. Garda vetting is an integral part of the application procedure for this course. It is a requirement for work placement and Garda Vetting from Cork ETB is required. The college Garda Vetting Office will assist you with your application.

What are the hours involved?

Teaching occurs from 9.00am to 5.00pm, Monday to Thursday and from 9.00am to 2.00pm on Fridays. Classes are of one hour duration.

WORK PLACEMENT/EXPERIENCE

Students will undertake a block work placement in a Special Education setting which they organise themselves. This includes any special schools, special sections with mainstream schools, Horizons (Cope Foundation) or organisations that educate children with special educational needs from the age of 6yrs to 18 years of age. Garda vetting is an integral part of the application procedure for this course.
