As an open economy Ireland relies on the international trade of goods and services. This course is designed to equip students with the knowledge and skills relating to international trade practice and operations so that so that they can take advantage of employment and further educational opportunities which exist in this area. Intercultural studies is included as an integral part of international business.

  • International Trade Practice 5N2072 – Appreciate the range of customs procedures, documents and schemes for the Irish exporter. Examine current transportation practices to include route selection, modes of transport etc. Process a range of International trade documents to include a bill of ladling, a certificate of origin, an insurance certificate and standardised consignment notes in accordance with current requirements. Carry out calculations relevant to international trade including quotations, invoices etc.
  • Legal Practice and Procedures 5N1394 – Understand the role of the constitution in the Irish legal system, legal terminology and the structure of the Irish court system. Describe proceedings in a court of law. Explore the impact of European law on the Irish system. Evaluate documents and legislation in your relevant area. Identify main categories of remedies e.g compensation etc.
  • Marketing Practice 5N1400 – Conduct a SWOT analysis. Develop a marketing plan for a specific product or service. Examine the life cycle of a range of products including new product development. Explain the elements of the marketing mix. Carry out market research applying appropriate techniques and research methodologies.
  • Spreadsheet Methods 5N1977 – Produce a spreadsheet that meets a simple design specification and is fit for purpose. Learn a range of spreadsheet features such as data and cell formatting techniques, conditional IF statements, financial, date and time functions. Generate a variety of types of graphs from spreadsheet data. Automate routine multi-step tasks through the creation, execution and management of simple macros.
  • Business Administration Skills 5N1610 – Examine a range of recruitment options for selecting and appointing staff and current employment rights legislation. Maintain a range of documents pertaining to HR management and employees  including employment contracts, attendance records etc. Explore sources of finance for a business including cash-flow. Examine different types of meetings held and complete a range of documentation necessary for the effective function of a meeting. Explain the role of quality systems.
  • Communications 5N0690 – Acquire the writing skills needed for the workplace, learn to speak fluently and coherently in a professional setting, develop interpersonal skills and have an understanding of the impact of ICT on society.
  • Work Experience 5N1356 – Planning, preparation and reflection on work placement. Job finding strategies, CV and personal statement preparation, interview skills. Practise employability skills with a view to future planning
  • Intercultural Studies 5N0765 – encourages students to appreciate diversity and multiculturalism in 21st century Ireland. Looks at Irish and International examples of cultural diversity – and both the positive and negative outcomes that can arise from these.
  • Chinese CCOC – Chinese Culture and a knowledge of Chinese used in everyday situations, pinyin and an introduction to Chinese characters/  German 4N1773 – An introduction to everyday German language, culture and basic grammar used in everyday situations (optional)
  • Supply Chain Operations 5N2409 (optional) – Explore the role of supply chain management in organisations,  understand global trading environments, learn about current trends in supply chains. Gain a particular focus on logistics paths from Asia, USA and Europe.

Additional Training 

  • Data Protection (online training): This course gives learners an overview of GDPR. The workshop examines what GDPR stands for and gives an understanding of the current data protection rules and obligations.  The learners also receive information on the types of data, the terminology associated with GDPR, the penalties with breaches, storage of data and general do’s and don’ts regarding data. A record of achievement from Morrison’s Island Campus is issued on successful completion.
  • Microsoft Outlook (online training): This course demonstrates how to use the internet to compose, send, receive and store electronic mail to include attaching a file to an email and managing email folders.  It also facilitates the learner to explore areas related to browser-based email systems including demonstrating the use of at least one current email software package for example: compose, send, receive, reply, forward, print, store electronic messages and open file attachments, attach a file to an email message and create and manage mailboxes and transfer messages to and from relevant mailboxes.  Furthermore, learners develop an appreciation of email etiquette as regards: content, length, style and tone of composed messages and they set up a web-based email account. A record of achievement from Morrison’s Island Campus is issued on successful completion.

Leaving Certificate, LCA or QQI Level 4. Mature students are exempt from Leaving Certificate requirement. CERFL proficiency at B2 for access to Level 5 courses for those whose first language is not English. All applicants will undergo a processing stage during which further information will be gathered in relation to their application.  An offer of a place on this course is contingent on the applicant meeting the entry requirements set out here and satisfactory completion of the processing stage.

    • QQI Component Maths 5N1833 and Statistics 5N2066 (available as option in the evening for learners requiring Maths for progression).
  • Work Experience: Students undertake a block work placement of 2 weeks in a business/industry environment.
