INTRODUCTION:

If you have a compassionate nature and would like to take on the roles and responsibilities associated with the profession of caring then this is the course for you. Learn all of the required competencies and skills but also learn about the importance of issues such as dignity, respect, empathy and confidentiality. Being a care worker is such as important role and this course will prepare you in all of the best ways. A fully equipped nursing/HCA room is used for all of the practical work.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS:

  • Leaving Certificate, LCA or QQI Level 4. Mature students are exempt from Leaving Certificate requirement.
  • CERFL proficiency at B2 for access to Level 5 courses for those whose first language is not English.
  • The application process: Applicants apply online through the college website. All applicants will be interviewed. An offer of a place on this course is contingent on the applicant meeting the requirements set out here and satisfactory presentation at interview.

Note: This course requires students to be Garda vetted through the college. Prospective students should also be aware that some aspects of this course are physically demanding and should satisfy themselves that they are physically fit enough to undertake it.

€300 including QQI examination fees (Medical card holders exempt from €50). €200 approx. for vaccines. Additional cost of €100 approx. for a work placement uniform.

  • QQI Component Maths (5N1833) – available as an option in the evening for learners requiring Maths for progression.

COURSE CONTENT

Care of the Older Person - 5N2706

Explore how older people change and develop psychologically, physically and socially. Develop practical caring strategies for working with older people.

Care Skills - 5N2770

Understand the holistic care of a client over the full life span from birth to death, including areas such as disabilities, mental health, care of the older person and palliative care. Practical instruction in washing, feeding, mobilisation, toileting and grooming. End of life care is included as part of the holistic care.

Care Support - 5N0758

Explore roles, responsibilities and entitlements of a care worker. Demonstrate an ability to plan and provide enhanced quality of care.

Palliative Care - 5N3769

Enable the learner to develop a holistic approach to caring for persons with a life-limiting illness and their families. Learn effective communication skills that promote a holistic environment. Understand the structure and organisation of palliative care services. Learn to meet the specific needs of a person with a life-limiting illness and respond sensitively to the practical and emotional needs of bereaved families.

English as a second Language - 5N1632

Improve your use of the English language and learn a wide range of language skills, both oral and written for a variety of situations such as social and work environments.

Word Processing - 5N1358

Learn to produce professional mailable document. Learn file management and a host of functions including clipart, headers, footers, watermarks, graphics, tabs etc.

Infection Prevention and Control - 5N3734

Learn how to prevent the spread of infection in the healthcare setting including hand hygiene and standard precautions. Practical instruction in all aspects of practice including cleaning following blood borne spillage and terminal cleaning.

Work Experience - 5N1356

Planning, preparation and reflection on work placement. Job finding strategies, CV and personal statement preparation, interview skills. Practise employability skills with a view to future planning.

Communications - 5N0690

Acquire the writing skills needed for the workplace, learn to speak fluently and coherently in a professional setting, develop interpersonal skills and have an understanding of the impact of ICT on society.

ADDITIONAL TRAINING / WORKSHOPS

  • People Moving and Handling Certification (requirement for work experience)This workshop teaches safe and effective techniques used in the safe moving and handling of people in a variety of settings. This training is mandatory for person’s involved in manual handling and people moving and handling tasks. It is required by legislation under The Safety Health and Welfare at Work (General Application) Regulation 2007 Part two chapter four. The training involves the theory module which is completed online (HSELanD.ie) and the practical module which is classroom based. The certificate obtained is valid for three years. 
  • HSE Safeguarding Adults at risk of abuse Certificate (requirement for work experience)Its primary focus is to inform learners on the guiding practice and procedures to keep vulnerable adults safe in the community and residential settingsThe content includes leaners being informed of their safeguarding responsibilities, the different types of abuse and neglect and how to recognise them and how to report concerns in line with HSE guidelines. All learners receive a certificate on completion at the end of the course. 
  • First Aid Workshop (online) – This First Aid Workshop will introduce the learner to the principles of First Aid. The workshop includes identifying the role of the First Aider. Learners will understand how to respond to various injuries and illnesses including choking, fainting, burns, heart attacks, strokes, panic attacks, sprains and strains. A Certificate of Completion from Morrison’s Island Campus is issued on successful completion. The purpose of this workshop is to give the learner a basic understanding of how to deal with First Aid Emergencies. It is not intended as a substitute for a full First Aid Response Course. 
  • AMRIC Hand Hygiene (HSELand) – Effective hand Hygiene is the single most effective thing that you can do to protect the people you care for and yourself from healthcare acquired infections. HCAI’s. But knowing is not enough – it’s important to apply what you have learnt and believe that it can be done. By the end of this course, you should know:Why hand hygiene is important
    – When to practice hand hygiene.
    – How to perform hand hygiene in line with the WHO 5 Moments.
    – How to take care of your hands.
  • AMRIC Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) (HSELand) – This course on Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) will enable and empower you to make an assessment on the selection of PPE for a task and to put on and remove PPE correctly. By the end of the course, you will be able to: Identify why you need to wear PPE and where you need to wear it.
    – Recognise the appropriate PPE to wear to protect the body, face and eyes, and hands in different situations.
    – Put on and remove all PPE in acute and non-acute setting.
    – Dispose of used PPE safely.
    – Reflect on your own actions and behaviours in relation to PPE and infection prevention and control.
  • AMRIC Infection Prevention and Control (HSELand) – Practical programme which includes specific measures for prevention of infection in all healthcare facilities, how to identify hazards and carry out a well-informed risk assessment. How to control the sources and prevent onward transmission of infection.

FAQs

Is a basic level of English needed to do this course?

Yes. It is necessary to have at least a basic understanding of English, both verbal and written.

Must I be Garda vetted for this course?

Yes. Garda vetting is an integral part of the application procedure for this course. It is a requirement for Work Placement and Garda Vetting from Cork ETB is required. The College Garda Vetting Office will assist you with your application.

How long is the full-time day course?

The duration of the full-time day course is one academic year, typically form mid-September until mid-May. The college closes for Mid-term, Christmas and Easter holidays as determined by the Department of Education and Skills.

When do exams take place?

Exams occur throughout the academic year with the bulk of exams occurring in December and late April/ May each year. Exam timetables are published by the Examinations & Assessment Committee through the Student Intranet and the Exam Scheduler App. 

How many people are likely to be in my class?

There are usually between 20-30 students assigned to a class-group, but it depends on demand each year.

Is there a part-time Healthcare Assistant Course?

Yes. The part-time equivalent HCA course is run at night. (English may/may not be offered depending on the night schedule). Many of the modules are offered online. Details regarding the night courses may be found HERE and the email address nightcollege@morrisonsislandcampus.ie may be of assistance also.

Does this course offer a student visa for international students?

No. Please note that it is the responsibility of the applicant to ensure that they meet Immigration and Visa requirements prior to applying for a place on a course. Post Leaving Certificate courses, such as this HCA course, are not eligible to obtain a study visa to enter the state. Further details are available at www.icosirl.ie.

Upon completion of the course, where can employment be secured?

Successful graduates from this course may secure employment in hospitals, nursing homes, (public and private), agency work, day care facilities, private homecare sector as a healthcare support assistant, community care and intellectual disability environments.

How many days per week is the full-time course?

For the full-time day course, teaching occurs from 9.00am to 5.00pm, Monday to Thursday and from 9.00am to 2.00pm on Fridays. Classes are of one hour duration.

WORK PLACEMENT/EXPERIENCE

Students will undertake four weeks (min 150 hours) of work placement in a hospital or healthcare setting. Garda vetting is an integral part of the application procedure for this course. The college follows the National Immunisation Advisory Committee’s (NIAC) Immunisation Guidelines for Ireland which states that healthcare students should, as a minimum, receive or have received completed courses of immunisations for

– Hepatitis B (minimum 2 doses)
– Influenza
– Measles, Mumps, Rubella (MMR 2 doses)
– Varicella (Chicken Pox) (1 or in some cases 2 doses).

Some placements may have additional vaccination requirements e.g. Covid 19. Vaccinations are at the student’s own expense and administered outside of the College, organised by the student at a GP’s surgery/medical centre etc. Proof of Vaccinations may be required by the College Vaccination Office and work placement.

Students are encouraged to source their own Work Placement but you will be supported by the Work Placement team should you need assistance to do this.
